Straight teeth !!! Is Braces the only option?

Did you always want straight teeth? Straight teeth not only serves cosmetic purposes but is also used in the correction of bites which would affect your function and dental health for the long term[1]
Checking for teeth which are not aligned the right way is always a part of a dental examination. Your dentist would discuss in detail the options to correct it.

Options to make your teeth straight include:

  • Fixed orthodontics
  • Clear aligners
  • Veneers- Can avoid braces if there is only mild spacing between front teeth
  • Cosmetic bonded restorations: Can provide similar results as veneers

Types of Braces:

Braces can either be metal, ceramic or placed on the inside surface of the teeth to be made invisible. Braces work by applying gentle force which is constant on to teeth resulting in moving your teeth into the required position. Braces are difficult to adjust to start with but patients normally get used to it in a few weeks (1)

Dental Veneers:

Veneers can be fabricated of porcelain/ direct bonded veneers. It can be used as a very good treatment alternative to close gaps or correct teeth which slight misaligment. However, dental veneers do not correct major malocclusions. It is always better to discuss with your dentist about whether dental veneers are a good treatment option for you.

Clear aligners are a good alternative for patients who require mild to moderate corrections of malocclusion. Invisalign has been proven to be an effective mode of clear aligner therapy.

Orthodontic treatments do take time to achieve good treatment outcomes. Retainers are normally prescribed at the end of orthodontic treatment.
